Here at RQV, we believe in celebrating the diversity of the melting pot we call America all year long. Thankfully, we have a whole month dedicated to celebrating Black History in particular. It is important now more than ever to #EducateYourself to stop the systemic racism our country has been facing for way too long. And since it’s still too cold to spend all of your time kayaking around Nashville, we thought maybe you can use this indoor time on some of that necessary education. Here are the top 5 documentaries we are recommending you watch this Black History Month!

Amend: The Fight for America

Join one of our favorite Hollywood men Will Smith (who loves a good boat ride) as he takes a deep DIVE into the 14th amendment. In case you didn’t know, the 14th amendment finally defines citizenship and gave that citizenship to African Americans and slaves. Watch the compelling trailer and get excited for its release on Netflix February 17th!

Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975

Stay up to date about the origins of the Black Power movement our country is highlighting today. This FREE documentary combines the history of the Black Power Movement with music from the talented Questlove. The film explores the Swedish filmmakers who set out to understand the movement and strife happening in America, specifically between 1967-1975.

They’ve Gotta Have Us

Are we obsessed with the movie industry? Yes! Have we taken the time to understand how the black community feels here? Maybe not. Get educated with this Netflix documentary that explores the deep struggle actors, actresses, producers, writers, directors and so many more experience in the industry. If you haven’t reflected on how representation on screen affects so many cultural communities, you will after watching this one!
